Letter to the editor: Renaming of North Ave. is a waste of time
I would like to address the issue of renaming North Ave. First, I believe it is a waste of time and, especially, money. The second issue is the name to be used. We are more than a university town. There are so many other parts to our community that are very worthy to have a street named after them. The university is only one part of our great town.
I would like to know who is going to pay for all of the street signs to be replaced. Is the university that is going to supposedly prosper from the name change helping with that expense? Who is going to help the businesses with the expense of changing their letter heading and all the paperwork that will need to be updated? To use a familiar phrase, “just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.”
Maybe there could be a petition started to stop the name change and really think through what, if anything, this would accomplish. What do we really want to be known for? What about the 292 million visitors to the Colorado National Monument? They didn’t come here for just the university. I am not against the university, as it may seem. But I do believe North Ave. should remain the same, or if a name change is sought I would suggest that the whole community not just one segment have a say in the name.
