Letter: Use your head, don’t be a pain in the rear

To those of you choosing not to wear helmets when biking:

Yes, you’re right, it’s your choice to increase the risk of head injury or death. But it’s a selfish one. Think about your young child or children who need you the way you are, not a vegetable. No young kids? Think about your friends and family who you would be burdening with your helplessness or breaking their hearts by dying on them.

Don’t care about any of that? Then what about those of us whose health-care and/or insurance costs keep rising due to preventable accidents (among other preventable things).

It’s so easy, a no brainer (pun intended) to put on a nice light, comfortable helmet and decrease the risk of being a pain in the butt to the rest of us. Spending time on our great new bike paths makes my pet peeve scream at me even more than before. I had to get it off my chest and I’m not apologizing. If this encourages one person to put on a helmet before jumping on the bike, it’s worth angering the rest of you.
