Letter: Vallario doesn’t speak for me

Lou Vallario, Garfield County’s elected sheriff, does not speak for me concerning his opposition to the new gun laws.

In fact, I have difficulty understanding why a group of 55 sheriffs who are elected to keep the peace in their communities would oppose the two new gun laws concerning background checks and banning of magazines of over 15 rounds of ammunition.

Each of us is entitled to our opinion on important and sensitive issues like gun control, and it is difficult to change the opinions of those who may differ with argument or personal bias. However, it seems reasonable that events such as the mass shooting at the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin, which happened one year ago on the same date as the Board of County Commissioners meeting during which Sheriff Vallario presented his opposition to the new laws, would be a call to change laws that make access to guns, and especially guns that can kill multiple people quickly, more difficult.
