Letter: Valley View’s prices raise our health insurance costs

I listen to the radio and read the newspaper so hear a lot of concern about the cost of health insurance in Garfield County, that it is ridiculous for the state of Colorado to include Garfield county in with those high-priced locations like Vail and Aspen.

Our commissioners are up in arms, going to sue the state for this gross injustice. OK … I’m all for reducing the cost of insurance, but I have to ask, have we been paying attention to why the cost is so high?

It’s not because we are smack in the middle of Ski Country USA — it’s because our local hospital charges rates that are equivalent to Vail and Aspen. If our hospital costs were equivalent to Denver, we would pay rates equivalent to Denver. (Probably oversimplified but you get the point.)

I recently underwent a procedure at Valley View. The quality and service were exceptional, and the people were outstanding. I have NO complaints about the way I was treated.

But the nearly $9,000 cost is ridiculous. Next time I’ll look at driving to Grand Junction — I’ll save enough to pay for the gas. And a good meal. And probably a pretty deluxe hotel room if needed.

If our other medical costs here were as high as Valley View’s, I would shrug it off as indicative of Glenwood Springs’ higher cost of doing business, but GMA is competitive with areas like Grand Junction. Maybe we are paying off those multi-million dollar construction projects. Maybe the product delivered by VVH is worth the cost, but at least let’s be honest and acknowledge that our insurance rates, unfortunately, reflect reality.
