Letter: Viva el flycatchers

Once again I watch with amazement as three, small juvenile Cordialleran Flycatchers depart their nest under the eave of our home in Basalt. Only a few weeks ago they were tiny, feathered balls just hatched in their nest. I’ve been fortunate to watch flycatchers spend the summers on our property for nearly 20 years.

It’s incredible to think that each summer, thousands of Cordilleran Flycatchers migrate to our Colorado streamsides from their wintering grounds in Mexico. Think about that if you will. These small birds must brave weather, predation, windows, on and on, just to reach our mountains to breed. Then, with their youngsters in the fall, they make the long journey back to the tropics for the winter.

I’ve owned and loved cats all my life, and most of them have been outdoor cats. But after learning about declining songbird populations from my friends at Roaring Fork Audubon, I can safely say I will never own an outdoor cat again. I’ve raised two kittens, two brothers, that I kept indoors their entire life, and they were the happiest cats.

Thank you, Roaring Fork Audubon, for continuing to educate the public about our declining bird populations. Hats off to the town of Carbondale for considering the outdoor cat ordinance.
