LETTER: Vote no on sales tax increase

Definition of a feasibility study: An analysis and evaluation of a proposed project to determine if it (1) is technically feasible, (2) is feasible within the estimated cost, and (3) will be profitable.

We are deeply concerned that none of this was totally completed using numbers that exist now with the current economy before the proposal to place a sales tax increase on the ballot for a new rec center. The people who are supporting a sales tax increase should walk the streets of Rifle and look at all the empty homes and apartments there are. That is a lot of people not living in Rifle and not paying sales tax. The city of Rifle has published the sales tax report and it is depressing. The loss of three more businesses in Rifle also means a loss of sales tax revenue.

We also do not believe that paying people to run a campaign to dupe people into voting for this increase is part of the study or paying for campaign propaganda out of the funds for this study is a legitimate way to complete this study. We also do not believe this study was complete with factual size and costs that should be defined before trying to fund a project of this magnitude. We also believe the citizens of Rifle deserve truthful facts before asking them to spend their hard earned money for something that in all likelihood will not even support itself. As has been stated by many people, many times, Rifle has enough debt at this time and does NOT need to take on another $21,000,000 (if this is even a factual amount) for 30 years. Let’s all vote NO NEW TAXES.
