LETTER: Waiting for the punch line

It’s got to be a joke but no one’s laughing.

Surely our county commissioners are not seriously opposing proposed state air quality rules. Why would they?

The Feb. 11 article titled “New air quality rules good for all business,” said the rules even have the support of oil and gas companies. They see the justification of these new guidelines to improve, protect and preserve our air quality standards.

So let’s all laugh at the joke along with the commissioners or at least listen to their reasoning for opposing these air quality rules. The oil companies seem not to mind the added expense to protect the air quality in Garfield County. Our many freedoms as Americans do not mean we have the freedom to jeopardize others. These are the very things we depend on our government representatives to protect us from and support better and higher standards as possible. Very strange indeed and the public is certainly due some answers. In a state that is known for its healthy way of living with hiking, biking, snowmobiling, skiing and recreation that challenges the mind and body. The air and water quality should be at the top of the list for everyone: rich, poor, Democrat, Republican, independent, atheists and those from all religions.

The people of Garfield County should let it be known that our right to live in a healthy environment is not for sale. Certainly our county commissioners have served long enough to fully understand this. So it’s got to be a joke, and I’m waiting for the punch line.
