Letter: We need a common sense approach to wildfires in the West

Here is an idea for the Aspen Ideas Festival. Fighting wildfires in Colorado and the West needs new strategies. The deaths of the 19 firefighters in Arizona brought this to my attention.

We just can’t rely on water drops, fire retardant spraying, and firefighters digging fire lines to stop these wildfires. Saving our forests for future generations should be a priority for our nation. We need serious planning.

We cannot wait to have beetle kill areas under control; we need to develop watering systems or water pipelines within the forests as soon as possible. There are simple engineering ideas that could be cost effective. A tax increase is not necessary to help fund this program. The federal budget can be cut elsewhere to help fund this very important program.

Plus, we need to curb housing developments near forest areas. These water systems could save the forests, homes, and most importantly, human life.

We need these kinds of pipelines instead of an XL Pipeline from Canada and wasting valuable water on natural gas fracturing. If climate change is going to deal us these high temperatures, droughts, and higher wind speeds, we need to fight back with common sense planning in the western United States.
