Letter: Welcoming Estonia’s help with oil shale
Just read the opinion piece written by Randy Udall from Carbondale. He seems to be quite interested in energy projects and writes well.
However, he does not really know Estonia. Estonia does use shale fuel. Their mounds have been in the recycle program they have for reclaiming the area for recreation. They do have a recreational park that is used for biking, swimming, hiking and cross country skiing in the winter on the sites used for extracting shale.
They have become very involved in many different sports since they have been independent of the Soviet Union. My husband is a native of Estonia, and we visited the mining area four years ago and found it almost impossible to find. We visited their mining museum there and drove around the countryside. The air has no pollution.
The thing we found was that they need more jobs in mining, which paid better than most other jobs, and the people living in that area were very proud to be of the mining community and missed the better pay they had under the Soviets.
So we are not afraid of Estonians trying to help our area reap the positive aspects of oil shale.
