Letter: What about Pitkin Avenue?

This is an open letter to the gentlemen on the Glenwood Springs City Council. Before we get too crazy spending millions of dollars we do not have on the Eighth Street connection, let’s have some serious dialogue on where all that traffic will be funneled.

As a denizen of Pitkin Avenue, the last thing in the world any of us want or need is additional traffic on our quaint little street. Yet, I have not read one word regarding how the side streets e.g. School, Pitkin and Colorado will be affected if there is a straight shot from Midland to Eighth to, presumably, Grand. As you know, hundreds of elementary and high school students regularly cross these streets to and from school. The safety of our children is paramount, as I regularly witness close calls between pedestrians and vehicles at Ninth and Pitkin.

Add to this confusion the backing of the semi trucks in and out of the post office, and the general traffic currently using these streets and their related intersections and we have a real traffic disaster in the making. Also, as you know, Pitkin Avenue dead-ends into the high school. We really do not need any more traffic along Pitkin.

My suggestion, if you intend to pursue the Eighth Street connection, is to only allow vehicle movements directly between Eighth and Grand. Do not, under any planning or real-world scenario, allow the side streets to be utilized for this additional traffic.

Thank you for your consideration.
