Letter: What’s really stupid?

Sarah Lubin
Glenwood Springs

In response to Mr. Fitzgerald’s exercising his free speech in the July 5 letter “Stupid is as Stupid Does,” I think it would be stupid to admire the good-ole boy system he seems to uphold so much. I think many are with me when I say I don’t admire billionaires, CEOs and the top 1 percent.

People in his postion seem to think that anyone else is lazy and taking advantage of the system. Let me ask you this, when was the last time hourly workers were paid enough to balance the national inflation rate? Why are so many in this time living paycheck to paycheck like myself? I have a college degree and grew up in an upper middle class family, and I am considered lucky to have a full time job with minimal benefits. I have little savings due to health concerns. I can’t even image what millions of others have to go through on less.

Meanwhile, corporations are lobbying to keep wages low, prevent unions and limit women’s health care while getting tax exemptions. They get away with hiring workers for low wages, don’t provide consistent scheduling and cut back hours to fund their second homes in Bali. You also mentioned your Social Security benefits got cut. I’ll remind you that if you did vote Republican, you voted to get rid of Social Security altogether. That sounds pretty stupid.
