Letter: Why housing just for teachers?

Vote No on 3B. Yes, we do need affordable housing for professionals. All professionals. Why should nurses, police officers and social workers pay for affordable housing for teachers when they themselves cannot afford housing?

Not only do we need affordable housing for professionals, we need affordable housing for all workers. What about the students attending these schools who live in substandard conditions, wouldn’t a bond better serve the students instead of the teachers? Teachers get step increases. Social workers do not get these step increases. In this area social workers will always make less year by year, their slight 1 percent annual cost of living increases will never match inflation. After a teacher has been with the district for several years, the salary has increased substantially.

If 3B passes, it is very unlikely that if another plan is presented to provide affordable housing to others, will pass. If property owners are already paying $50-$200 more annually to house teachers, will they be will to pay another $200 to house nurses, police offices and social workers?

It is selfish and shortsighted for teachers to feel they are more entitled to affordable housing than other working professionals in this area, or more entitled to affordable housing than their students.
