Letter: Why the upscale firehouses?

Concerning the upcoming vote on a mill levy increase for the Carbondale fire district. Do these districts take into consideration economic downturns or budget shortfalls when they design and build these monolith firehouses I see around the valley? They are all super custom and have an appearance of an estate in Aspen.

Just look around, from New Castle to Aspen. The cost of these buildings is in the millions. Is this type of architecture really necessary? A more simple structure would suffice. I put this in the same context as the monolith hospitals they build in our small valley. Take away the flat screen TVs and the granite countertops and lower my bill.
