Yes On Ballot Questions 2A and 5A

I am writing to encourage you to Vote Yes on Question 2A in the city and on Question 5A in the Rural Fire Protection District to increase the mill levy for the Glenwood Springs Fire Department. By voting yes on 2A and 5A, the GSFD will be able to continue staffing fire trucks and ambulances at today’s levels of service.

GSFD is funded by a combination of property taxes, city sales tax and ambulance fees. Property tax revenues have dropped up to 39 percent since 2008. City sales tax is getting better, but 2012 revenues were still down 17 percent from 2007 levels.

The operating mill levy for the GSFD has not been increased in 19 years in the rural district.

If Questions 2A and 5A don’t pass, it is a reality that staffing may be cut. In 2012, the GSFD responded to 1,583 calls, up 15 percent from 2010. It is common to have two or three calls for service happening at the same time. If there is less staffing, who will cover those other emergency calls?

If the mill levy doesn’t pass, the Insurance Service Office (ISO) rating could increase, which generally means a direct cost increase in insurance premiums.

Voting Yes on 2A and 5A will maintain a strong fire department, providing a vital service to our community. It will give the GSFD more of their own funding, instead leaving the fire department to rely so heavily on struggling sales taxes to support the fire department, along with all other city services. The cost to a homeowner is only $16 per $100,000 of assessed valuation annually.

Please vote yes on Ballot Questions 2A and 5A.
