Letter: Value of English in Action

I have been involved with English in Action for over a year now, and wanted to shed a little bit of light on my experience. For anyone who doesn’t know, English in Action is a nonprofit in our valley that helps integrate immigrant residents into our community through tutoring and mentoring.

I have had two students, and have kept a fairly regular schedule with them. We meet once a week for an hour, usually at a local coffee shop, and work together to advance their English language skills. It is undoubtedly one of the best hours of my week.

During that meeting, we review vocab and draw pictures, make weird gagging noises in our attempts to pronounce strange English words and laugh about the new Spanglish language we have created to communicate. I took Spanish classes in school for over 10 years, and while it sure comes in handy during some of our lessons, it’s not a necessary skill for all of our tutors.

Anyone (even if you only speak English) can volunteer as a tutor. You are paired with a student who has a compatible understanding of English. You are also given countless resources to assist with your lessons.

Learning English not only helps these students in their professional lives, but also at home with family and children who may already speak the language. The feeling of warmth and accomplishment EIA tutors receive when they see this success well overcompensates for the hour we give each week.

I’d love to see more of our community get involved. Learn more: EnglishInAction.org.
