Letter: We must respect each other

Good column on listening to others. I agree with your belief that at our core we share many values and starting there we should work together to respect each others views.

Colorado’s voter registration numbers are interesting. In 2013 they were: Democratic: 31.45 percent; Republican: 31.65 percent; unaffiliated: 35.9 percent.

While we have pockets of liberalism (see Boulder and Denver counties) and pockets of conservatism (see Douglas and El Paso counties), I believe we are indeed a “purple state.”

I am a liberal ,but in my 77 years as a Coloradan I have voted for both Democrats and Republicans. My son is a Republican and my daughter a Democrat. When they get into arguments I tell them to go back and read about what the Continental Congress did and the compromises the Founding Fathers entered upon to create this great country.

After the Second World War, young men came back from overseas and started family and careers. Some went into politics. They were Democrats and Republicans and would argue their positions in Congress during the day but in the evening they would have dinner together — because they respected each other. After all, they had been brothers in arms.

We need to respect each other and work together.
