Memorial Day Happenings

The American Legion Post 100 in Carbondale will have its traditional Memorial Day ceremonies on Monday. Veterans are asked to meet at the Legion Hall at 9 a.m., after which they will proceed to Hillcrest Cemetery on White Hill for a moment of silence and 21-gun salute at 9:15 a.m.

A similar ceremony will be held at 9:30 a.m. at Evergreen Cemetery on Eighth Street, and at 10 a.m. the procession ends at the Veterans Memorial Bridge over the Roaring Fork River on Highway 133 for another 21-gun salute and ceremonial tossing of the wreath into the river. Traffic will be stopped briefly during the ceremony.

American Legion Post 83, of Glenwood Springs, will sponsor services at 11 a.m. Memorial Day at Rosebud Cemetery. The featured speaker this year will be Hal Terrell, author of “Heroes Among Us.”

On Friday afternoon, Legion members and the Glenwood Springs Rotary will be placing flags at the gravesites of all veterans in the cemetery. For more information, call Dan LeVan at 945-8208.

All veterans, as well as the public, are cordially invited to attend the annual Memorial Day Observance at noon Monday at the Roaring Fork Valley Veterans Memorial, located on the east side of the Pitkin County Courthouse, 506 E. Main St. in Aspen. The U.S. Flag Ceremony will be conducted by the Roaring Fork Valley Veterans Honor Guard. Veterans are encouraged to wear items of military memorabilia. Patriotic songs will be sung by those in attendance.

Veterans’ graves at Rose Hill Cemetery in Rifle will be decorated during Memorial Day weekend with American flags to honor those who have served.
