Jim and Becky Westphal of New Castle are pleased to announce the birth of their daughter, Ellie Samantha Westphal at 8:15 a.m. February 25, 2009, at Valley View Hospital. She weighed 8 pounds, 2.4 ounces, and was 19 3/4 inches long at birth.She has a big sister, Gracie Westphal, who is 2 years old.Proud grandparents are Jeannie and Harold Cox of New Castle.

Hallie Kuhn, daughter of Eric and Sue Kuhn of Glenwood Springs and soon-to be graduate at Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, Cal., has been awarded the Churchill Scholarship for one year of study at the University of Cambridge in England. Between 13 and 15 Churchill scholars are selected nationwide each year. Hallie, who will receive her bachelor of science degree in biology, will research the human papilloma virus responsible for cervical cancer. She has extensive training in mathematics, chemistry, systems engineering, and computer science in preparation for work in bioinformatics. Hallie has volunteered in a rape and sexual assault crisis center in Los Angeles and in a Red Cross asylum in Denmark, where she spent a semester abroad. After her year at Cambridge, Hallie plans to return to the United States to study for an M.D.-Ph.D in clinical oncology.

Ted Lee, Denison University class of 2010, of Carbondale, is studying with the University of Adelaide program in Australia. Lee majors in economics at Denison.

Brian Mable Karate recently hosted the annual Western Tang Soo Do testings and seminars held in Glenwood Springs.

Riley Bolitho won first place in the Colorado Council on the International Reading Associations annual Young Writers Award Contest. Rileys short story, Taneks Freedom, was selected from entries submitted from across Colorado in the intermediate fifth and sixth grade writers category.He was honored at the Young Writers Luncheon held in contention with the organizations state conference February 7 in Denver.Riley is a sixth-grade student at Riverside Middle School in New Castle.

Michael Cowdrey of Glenwood Springs has been named to the University of St. Thomas 2008 fall semester deans list.

Local artist Dan Young has accepted an invitation to be part of the 11th annual Maynard Dixon Country in Mt. Carmel, Utah August 26 – 30. He will present up to four new paintings in the fine art show and join 30 other artists in the special event, and display new works painted during his week stay in this southern Utah community. Part of the proceeds from these event go to the Thunderbird Foundation for the Arts to support artists retreats on the Maynard Dixon property, scholarships for high school students and art day camps for people with special needs.
