Joy and Mckenzie Covington of Glenwood Springs are pleased to announce the birth of their daughter, Meecah Sierra Covington, at 10:48 a.m. April 9, 2009, at Valley View Hospital. She weighed 5 pounds, 7.7 ounces, and was 193⁄4 inches long at birth.Meecahs big brother, Kyto Copper Covington, is 1 year, 3 months old.Proud grandparents are Sumjee and Jake McGavock of Carbondale, Gary Bascom of Marble, Cindy Bascom of New Castle and Michael Covington of Ouray.

Fifteen members of the Glenwood Springs Kiwanis Club visited the Paraho Oil Shale facility at Anvil Points April 11. The members were provided with a detailed explanation of oil shale reserves, geology and processing, including explanations of various methods of kerogen extraction and uses of shale oil, and its potential impact internationally.

One hundred-fifty Lions Club members from 30 Western Colorado communities gathered in Glenwood Springs April 17 and 18 for the annual convention of Lions International District 6 West.Events were held at the Glenwood Springs Community Center. Hosts of the event were: Susan Barrena, president of the Glenwood Springs Lions; Joe Chacon, president of the Basalt Lions; and Judy Shaffer, president of the New Castle Lions.Glenwood Lion Gary Broetzman was elected vice district governor for the coming fiscal year, starting July 1.The Friday evening western barbecue was hosted by the Basalt Club. Live entertainment was provided by Twirp Anderson, who also acted as auctioneer for artwork and memorabilia.The Glenwood Springs Percussion Ensemble acted as waitpersons for the event, raising funds to attend future competitions. They also gave a drum performance for the Lions.

Cameron Fisher and Natasha Whiting of Glenwood Springs are proud to announce the birth of their son, Bentley Michael Fisher, born at 6:30 p.m. April 9, 2009, at Valley View Hospital. He weighed 6 pounds, 3 ounces, and was 181⁄2 inches long at birth. Proud first-time grandparents are Tony and DeeDee Fisher of Glenwood Springs and Joanna Whiting of New Castle.

As part of the Hard Bat Ping Pong tournament series, six players met at Beau Jos in Glenwood Springs Tuesday, April 21, to pick a regional champion. Good luck to Luis Polar, who will play in the final in Eagle next Wednesday. The winner of the Eagle final will head to Las Vegas, for a chance to win the grand prize of $100,000.

Scott and Patty Henke of Carbondale and Walter Bate and Martha Ryan of Clear Lake, Iowa, announce the engagement of their children, Amber Lee Henke and Stefan Walter Bate of Carbondale.Amber is a 2003 graduate of Fort Lewis College in Durango, and a music teacher at Crystal River Elementary School; and Stefan is a 2003 graduate of Denver University and employed by Vectra Bank of Snowmass Village.The couple became engaged in September and plan to be married in a private ceremony on June 27, 2009, at Maroon Bells in Aspen.

Todd and Nicole Zoerink of New Castle are pleased to announce the birth of their son, Cade Zoerink, at 4:38 p.m. April 14, 2009, at Valley View Hospital. He weighed 8 pounds, 4 ounces, and was 20 inches log at birth.Proud grandparents are Dennis and Pat Zoerink and Gabe and Beth Wilch, all of Sioux Falls, S.D.
