Memories & Milestones

During the month of April, Cactus Valley Elementary students from Silt (with help from Coal Ridge High students) raised more than $2,000 for Pennies for Peace, a program started by Greg Mortenson, author of the best-selling book Three Cups of Tea. His Central Asia Institute builds schools in the mountainous regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan, giving children, especially girls, an opportunity to get a community-based education in areas where terrorist organizations frequently recruit children. Students learned about Mortensons vision of promoting literacy, through reading young peoples versions of his book, studied the culture of Pakistan and Afghanistan through enrichment activities, and daily added pennies to a 6-foot-tall receptacle. They were excited and proud to have made a difference in so many childrens lives.
