Say what you will about Wal-Mart’s exact role in the current American economic climate, but the ubiquitous mega-retailer does do its part to help out once in a while. To that end, every Wal-Mart in the nation (including local stores in Glenwood Springs and the new Supercenter in Rifle) will have two $1,000 Sam Walton Community Scholarships available in May.

The scholarships are awarded based on academic record, ACT or SAT test scores, community and extracurricular involvement, work experience and financial need. All scholarship recipients will also be entered into a Colorado competition for a chance to win an additional $4,000 scholarship, plus a national competition for $20,000 extra.

Applications are available at local Wal-Marts and through high school counsellors, with a deadline of Feb. 1.
