Each year at Sunlight Mountain Resort, more than 100 dedicated youngsters hit the slopes, training gates and running drills in hopes of being like Bode Miller. For decades the Sunlight Ski Team and Buddy Werner ski programs have helped turn young skiers into little rippers, producing plenty who’ve moved on to the U.S. Ski Team or competitive college ski teams.

Sunlight’s team currently boasts 14 racers with eight returning from last year, with kids ranging in age from 9 to 17 and hailing from Carbondale to Rifle. The team has been preparing for the race season since October and practices four days a week, traveling across the state for races.

From 6-9 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 31, residents will have a chance to help these young skiers reach their goals. The Sunlight Ski Team and Buddy Warner League will host a spaghetti dinner and silent auction at the Glenwood Springs Community Center. Funds will go to help with team travel, equipment and coaching; without local support many kids could not afford to travel to races or participate in team training. Tickets for the dinner will be available at the door and will be $8 for adults, $6 for children 12 and under and $25 for a family of four.

For information on the dinner or to make donations to the silent auction, please contact Becky Strohmeyer at 420-1596. For information on the ski team, call Harry Maybee at 945-7633.

Glenwood Springs Elks Lodge and Jim Garland, Christmas Memorial Dinner chairman, sends out a thank-you to all of its members who helped volunteer for this year’s dinner.
