Input wanted on hut system tree-thinning
2002’s disastrous fire season has prompted the White River and Pike-San Isabel national forests to propose a program of hazardous fuels reduction on 42 acres of land surrounding 12 huts owned by the 10th Mountain Division system. The proposal calls for removing dead and dying vegetation near the buildings, thinning of trees and brush and pruning other trees to reduce the chance of high-intensity fires. Leftover slash would be available to the public as firewood and landscaping chips or burned after snowfall. Depending on weather, the project may begin this winter.
Public input is being solicited on the project: please send written comments to Bill Westbrook, Aspen District Planner, 806 W. Hallam, Aspen CO 81611 by March 22.
