Whitney Cotton, of New Castle, who recently graduated as a ROTC cadet at the University of Wyoming, is a newly commissioned officer in the U.S. Army. She completed a rigorous military training program while earning her degree at UW, and received a gold bar for the rank of second lieutenant.

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Samuel J. Sellers, son of Theresa Klien, of Carbondale, and Samuel R. Sellers, of Keller, Texas, and his fellow shipmates have been deployed to the Western Pacific. They departed on the scheduled deployment while assigned to the guided-missile destroyer USS Higgins, homeported in San Diego.

Sellers is one of more than 7,600 sailors and Marines from Carrier Strike Group 11 deployed in the Western Pacific in support of the global war on terrorism.

Sellers joined the Navy in February 2001.

Kimberly Burchfield, daughter of Rosella Burchfield, of Parachute, has been chosen as a state finalist in the National American Miss Colorado Pageant, Aug. 13-15 at the Marriott Hotel in Denver.
