Daniel and Jessie Cordova, of New Castle, are pleased to announce the birth of their son, Jonathan Micah Cordova, at 6:25 p.m. on Aug. 12, 2005. He weighed 8.5 pounds and was 2012 inches long at birth.Proud grandparents are Jim and Sheryl Shrull, of New Castle, and David and Marty Cordova, of Rifle.Daniel Cordova is in the U.S. Marines and is deployed out of Camp Pendleton, Calif., for six to nine months on a ship in the Marine Expedition Unit.

Vernon Murray, a 20-year veteran operator for Garfield County’s Road and Bridge Department, has won the 2005 Colorado State Fair Road Equipment Roadeo, at the State Fair in Pueblo on Aug. 26. Vernon bested 21 other county operators from across the state, scoring an impressive 76 out of a possible 80 points, with a 5:55 elapsed time.This is Murray’s first win, after competing in the State Fair event eight times. He won a check for $1,000.The fair has conducted the Road Equipment Roadeo for the past 21 years, with help from local Caterpillar dealer Wagner Equipment Co. For the event, contestants maneuver through obstacles, crack eggs, make baskets and perform other tests to demonstrate skills required to operate huge diesel-powered motor graders.
