Rebecca Leigh Watson and Justin Lyle Beattie were married Sept. 4, 2005, in La Jolla, Calif. Becky is a cell biology specialist and works in sales and technical support for Eppendorf North America. She graduated from the University of Colorado in Boulder in 2001 with bachelor degrees in business administration and molecular, cellular and developmental biology. She is the daughter of Michele Newby of Wildomar, Calif., and Bruce Watson of San Jose, Calif. Justin is an industrial real estate broker with Grubb & Ellis representing developers, landlords and companies in the buying, selling and leasing of industrial real estate assets. He graduated from Glenwood Springs High School in 1995 and graduated from the University of Colorado in 1999 with a finance degree from the School of Business. His parents are Steve and Sharon Beattie of Glenwood Springs. His grandparents are Lyle and Patsy Beattie.

Glenwood Springs High School senior Abrihette Yawa has been named a Commended Student in the 2006 National Merit Scholarship Program. The honor recognizes Yawas strong performance on the 2004 Preliminary SAT test, or PSAT. Commended students place among the top five percent of high achieving students across the country. Yawa also recorded a 1460 overall on the SAT test, and a 790 reading score out of a possible perfect 800 in that category.

Capt. Mark R. Hunter, the son of George and Patricia Hunter, of Glenwood Springs, is the new Executive Officer of Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach. The Master Jet Base is the largest air station in the U.S. Navy.Prior to reporting to the air station, Capt. Hunter served on the staff of Commander Naval Air Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet. For his outstanding performance of service as Director of Operations, Plans and Policy, he was awarded the Legion of Merit. Capt. Hunter is a 1978 graduate of Glenwood Springs High School and 1982 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. His personal awards include the Distinguished Flying Cross with combat V, Bronze Star, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (four awards), Strike Flight Air Medal (eight awards), Navy Commendation Medal (seven awards, three with combat V), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, NATO Medal, and several unit awards and commendations.Capt. Hunter and his wife, Susan, live in Virginia Beach.



Nate and Melody Berhow of Silt are pleased to announce the birth of their son, Elijah Jay Berhow, at 3 a.m., Sept. 30, 2005, at Valley View Hospital. He weighed 7 pounds, 11 ounces and was 21 inches long at birth.Proud grandparents are Lorraine Berhow of Fertile, Minn., and Ellis and Betty Hunt of Grand Junction.

Paul and Jan Romero, of Glenwood Springs, are happy to announce the engagement of their daughter, Trina Jannelle Romero, to Stephen Brian Benson, son of Donald and Carolyn Benson, of New Canaan, Conn. Trina is a 1998 graduate of Glenwood Springs High School. Both Steve and Trina graduated from the University of Colorado. They lived in Aspen for several years, and Steve was employed as a reporter by the Aspen Times. They are now living in Sun Valley, Idaho, and are planning a wedding in Costa Rica in September 2006.



After 33 years of dedicated service to Garfield County Road & Bridge, Larry Gardner retired on Thursday, Oct. 13. He started with Road & Bridge in July of 1972 and has continued to be a valuable asset to the crew, passing on his knowledge to the newer hands. Larrys dedication and knowledge will be missed.
