Volunteers kick in for shelter trailer

Recent wildfires in California, Snowmass and the Front Range helped stir some memories of disasters that have hit right here in the valley. But if trouble should visit the Glenwood Springs area again, there’s a new resource which could help people displaced by fire or other problems ” a new shelter trailer operated by the Roaring Fork Branch of the American Red Cross.

The converted horse trailer, which could provide temporary assistance to as many as 60 people, was donated by the Roaring Fork Kiwanis Club of Glenwood Springs. Kiwanis Club president Sandi Anderson was instrumental in getting the project rolling; her husband John, son Michael and daughter Janet all helped complete the interior shelving, lighting and painting. Other volunteers included Manuel Cruz, Mildred Alsdorf and Will Handville, with donations provided by Pitkin Iron and Eagle Signs.

The local branch office of the Red Cross is on temporary hiatus due to a lack of funding, but the Roaring Fork Branch of Disaster Services is still fully active with almost 60 volunteers, all ready to respond in case of emergency. Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer or making a donation can call 947-0400.
