Miles of Smiles gets boost

A mobile dental program which helps provide services to underprivileged children in Garfield County has been given a sizeable shot in the arm. The Miles of Smiles program, operated by Catholic Charities, recently received a grant of $15,000 from Caring for Colorado, a statewide health foundation. The money will go to support two local coordinators who will organize appointments for the Miles for Smiles mobile van, arrange follow-up treatment and schedule educational presentations in schools throughout Garfield, Pitkin and Eagle counties. In the next year, Catholic Charities hopes to coordinate dental screening and treatment for more than 700 underserved children in the area.

Youth center seeks donations

After years of uphill struggle, the youngsters involved in the Colorado West Youth Center deserve a bit of downhill fun. The organization, which serves at-risk juveniles, is looking for donations of winter sports equipment to help with exercise programs and activities for its participants. The youth center is searching for new or used alpine and nordic skis, boots and poles, plus snowboards and snowshoes, as well as warm clothing, jackets, gloves and ski pants. Colorado West Youth Center will also accept donations of board games and arts and craft supplies ” and even spare pennies from your coin jar, which will go to a project to help the needy this Christmas. For more information or to arrange pick-up of items, call Susan at 928-0725.
