A school board must make many difficult decisions. The most difficult decision is having to ask taxpayers for money. When voters receive their election ballots, they will find a mill levy override question for Garfield School District 16. We take the job of educating our students very seriously, and that is why we are asking for a “yes” vote on the override.

It takes money to educate children. I think Garfield 16 has done an adequate job up to this point with the funding it receives. Is adequate good enough?

We lose precious resources every time a teacher or administrator moves just a few miles down the road so they can make more money. This makes it hard to keep a stable staff.

Every time you put a new teacher into a classroom, precious time is stolen from our children’s learning. Every time a new principal is hired, time is lost in instructional help for our teachers.

It takes precious time and money to train new staff, only to have another school district benefit from our money. Let’s keep it here.

This mill levy override will help do that.

The override is not just about salaries. It’s about making our schools safer, it’s about providing current and up-to-date technology, it’s about educating our children.

The Garfield 16 school board has been prudent with your money, because we know it does not come easy, but we need your help. Last year we made over $200,000 in budget cuts. If we cut much deeper, we all will pay the consequences.

Please help us keep the quality staff we have to give our children the education they deserve.

– Ronald Palmer of Parachute is the president of the Garfield School District 16 School Board.
