A Silt resident since 1971, 83- years-young Cleo Schultz is proud of the five generations of women in her family. Her great-great-granddaughter Alyssa Marie Haler was born Aug. 14 in Fruita. Alyssa’s mother is Amanda Haler, grandmother is Joy Hale, and great-grandmother is Margaret Smith.Schultz rode horses four miles back and forth to school when her parents ranched near Eagle. She has been the driving force for Silt Parks and Rec. Before sports were organized in the Silt area, she brought water to enthusiastic children as they practiced sports, back before hydration was a widespread safety consideration.The New Castle Branch Library Storytime coordinator and children’s librarian Diane Webster would like children and their moms to participate in the annual Halloween Parade on Friday, Oct. 31. Children will meet at the library and begin the parade at 10:30 a.m., heading west on Main Street as far as Elk Creek Restaurant, then across the street towards Hogback Pizza. The parade will cross the street again at the New Castle Post Office and head back to the library.-If you have kids that are just dying to be scared silly at Halloween time, you must take them to the haunted house located above Accent on Tops near Mr. T’s Hardware. The cost of the haunted house is $4/child. “Fright Lite” for younger kids is open from 6-7:30 p.m. every Friday and Saturday night ending Nov. 1. “Scary Tales: Childhood Stories Gone Bad” is open from 8-10 p.m. on those nights. -Beginning Nov. 11, a five-week youth wrestling program will be offered to participants in grades six and below. Young wrestlers can earn bronze, silver gold or platinum certificates for testing successfully at each level. Practices are Tuesdays and Thursdays. The cost is $25/child for residents of New Castle. Register by Nov. 11 at either the New Castle Community Center or Town Hall.-The New Castle Rec Department is also offering basketball for adults in both the adult drop-in and adult basketball league. The registration deadline for the league is Oct. 31, and games will be played on Wednesday nights at Riverside Middle School. The cost per team is $125. Sign up at Town Hall or the Community Center.Referees are needed and will be paid $15/game. Call the Rec Department at 984-3352 if you are interested.-Remember, the 17th Annual Ten Thousand Villages International Craft Sale will be held on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1 and Nov. 7 and 8 at the Glenwood Mennonite Church located at 2306 Blake Ave. The wonderful unusual items are reasonably priced and all the proceeds go back to the villages where they were made. Here’s the perfect place to find great musical instruments, colorful tree ornaments, and handcrafted nativity scenes, to name just a few things. Visit the sale from 6-9 p.m. on Fridays and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays. You will find at least one perfect item for a music teacher, or your mom, or your sister, or your mentor.-The menu for the CMC Senior Nutrition Luncheon for Monday, Oct. 27, at the New Castle Community Center will be a virgin Bloody Mary, Hungarian ghoulash, wild rice, Halloween carrots, Devil’s food cake, and ghost topping.-This weekend marks the beginning of daylight savings time, so set your clocks and watches back one hour Saturday night.Kay Vasilakis’ column, “New Castle News,” appears every other Thursday.
