Now is the time to help the victims of Katrina

Devastation – pure and simple. The scenes from the hurricane-ravaged areas in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama are unbelievable. The death toll of Hurricane Katrina continues to rise, and the people left homeless are too many to count.Katrina was unmerciful. Now it’s time to help. The people of the ravaged areas are in need of all kinds of help. That help is up to all of us, and it begins here in our backyards. The Red Cross is always a good place to start. They already have been inundated with calls from people who want to help. With a disaster of this magnitude, there can’t be enough help, but there can be too much of certain kinds of help. It’s still too early to even evaluate all the different kinds of aid and supplies that are needed. Food and clothing donations aren’t being accepted by the Red Cross right now. The volume of some donations have been too much, too soon. But our neighbors to the south still need our help and will continue to need help for months to come.Donations of cash will always be accepted, and there will be a time when other items will be required to help the residents in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama start over. There are plenty of ways to help, including local fund-raisers and benefits being scheduled for the future. To help with the disaster effort or for more information, there are several local agencies that can be contacted. Those residents who found themselves in Katrina’s path have a very long way to go as they try and rebuild their lives and put this devastating disaster behind them.Providing a helping hand is the least we can do in their time of need.
