Pig kissing is good for kids

Glenwood Springs, CO Colorado

It’s swine time again in Glenwood Springs.Yes, that pink pig is going through its annual abductions and finding itself in various precarious spots – popping up on lawns and in front of businesses, being rescued from a rooftop, and even taking a ride around town in a convertible. That’s one pampered pig.But as YouthZone’s Mary Jean Carnevale points out, the annual Kiss-n-Squeal fundraiser isn’t about the pig who gets smooched, it’s about the kids.”We’re out their to help kids connect and grow with their community,” she said. The pig is just the engine YouthZone hopes will drive them to their goal of raising $80,000 for the program, which offers mentoring, counseling, outreach programs and education for the area’s youth and their families. The benefits that YouthZone provides for so many in this community are priceless.Let’s face it, the “honor” of kissing a pig isn’t much of a prize for the event’s top fundraiser. The nine people out in the community vying for the pig kiss are giving up their personal time for a cause worthy of their sacrifice. They are doing the heavy lifting, now it’s up to the rest of the community to help them hit that $80,000 mark by contributing to their campaigns.Stop by your favorite candidate’s fundraising event and give them a few dollars. Every little bit helps. Each dollar raised counts as a vote. You also can vote for your favorite candidate on YouthZone’s Web site (www.youthzone.com) or bid on a number of items up for auction – everything from restaurant and lodging certificates to signed footballs. We’re blessed with a number of worthy nonprofits in the area, and YouthZone is on that list. So go out and reward the potential pig kissers with a donation to their campaign. It’s an investment in kids and, ultimately, the future of our community.Kiss-n-Squeal is about so much more than just kissing a pig.
