Re-elect Davis for Glenwood council

Glenwood Springs City Councilman Rick Davis faces a challenge from longtime resident Larry Beckwith for the Ward 1 seat in the Nov. 4 election.

While Beckwith is raising the important issue of golf course financing in his campaign, Davis remains the better all-around candidate.

There’s no doubt about Davis’ dedication to the city and the community. He is a forward thinker, with a strong environmental record on issues such as light pollution, stormwater runoff and hillside preservation.

Davis has invested extra time in developing his own leadership skills, and he really does his homework. Ahead of a recent meeting on Grand Avenue construction projects, Davis visited dozens of downtown businesses to hear firsthand what merchants are experiencing.

He takes time to think about things, and to listen to people, before making decisions.

Beckwith, meanwhile, is a solid and sensible citizen. But his community service resume is short, and his campaign is focused on recent council actions. He is coming across as a single-issue candidate, even though he clearly outlines the other challenges the city faces.

Beckwith is absolutely right to question council for pursuing $8 million in golf course financing without a public vote, and this endorsement of Davis is made in hopes of keeping a good leader while convincing him to shift his policy.

Davis also needs to expand his tolerance of differing opinions among council members, and to lighten up in his approach. A thicker skin and a ready sense of humor would serve him and his constituents well if they choose him to continue in his leadership role on council.

Advice aside, Davis is the best choice for Ward 1 voters.
