Readers Say Thanks

A sincere thank you to State Farm Insurance, Garfield County and EnCana Oil & Gas for generously contributing to the Three Rivers Region chapter of Kids Voting Colorado. In recent weeks Garfield County and State Farm each contributed $4,000, while EnCana contributed $3,000 to support this worthwhile program.Kids Voting is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization working to foster good citizenship and plant the seeds for the next generation of informed voters through a variety of civics education programs. This fall, Kids Voting helped schools and teachers from Parachute to Basalt conduct mock elections coinciding with the real national, state and local elections. Our intent is to give kids a chance to think about candidates and issues, and to get a taste of what real democracy is all about.Kids Voting looks at voter apathy as a challenge. By teaching students the habit of voting from kindergarten on, and giving them the skills to be informed voters and empowered community members, we are helping to ensure that they will vote throughout their lifetimes. And, by asking students to accompany their parents to the polls or vote together on mail-in ballots, we expect to increase voter turnout and civic participation. Thanks to EnCana, State Farm and the Garfield County Commissioners, our local students are participating in a program where everyone wins!
