Last weekend’s fourth annual Devereux Cup polo event surpassed our expectations, with the highest attendance since the Hotel Colorado restored this popular 19th century contest in 2002. We’d like to thank everyone who joined us for two days of free food, festivities and polo matches. The Devereux Cup was the brainchild of David Storm, president of Providence Hospitality Partners, Hotel Colorado’s management company, and I. Many in the Roaring Fork Valley know that Hotel Colorado’s association with polo goes back to the hotel’s co-founder, Walter Devereux, whose passion for the sport helped put Glenwood Springs and Hotel Colorado on the map. We created the Devereux Cup to honor his memory and to give the community a taste of excitement our great-grandparents must have experienced as they played or watched “the sport of kings” here in their own back yard. This event is part of our commitment to and investment in keeping the hotel’s vibrant history alive. This year’s celebration kicked off on Saturday evening with a Players Reception. I enjoyed showing some of our guests the historic memorabilia in the Polo Wine and Martini Lounge, home of the Devereux Cup when not in play. The reception had a Western theme, with a lavish buffet and beverages and music by Jon Chandler and the Wichitones. Jon, a noted singer and songwriter, is known for his historical accuracy and Old West sensibility.Guests at Sunday’s polo matches were treated to an authentic cowboy cookout, with barbecue aplenty for all to enjoy as they cheered their favorites on the polo field. We’re pleased to report that our own Team Hotel Colorado won the Devereux Cup this year. Congrats to Barry Stout and the entire team!Dave Storm and I were delighted that so many of our friends and neighbors turned out for the Devereux Polo Cup weekend. This is one of three Gift to the Community events we hold each year. In closing, I want to add my personal thanks to Barry Stout, and all our players as well as our new food and beverage manager, Dan McKinney, Karen Timmer and Erin Amichaux for feeding us, and Lu Stasko for her public relations efforts who helped make this year’s event such a huge success.Larry MacDonaldGeneral Manager Hotel Colorado

I’m not often given to public displays of affection, but on the morning of Monday, July 19, I felt it necessary to give an old and dear friend a proper send off.
