School’s opening delayed

Unforeseen delays have forced the Garfield Re-2 School District to postpone the opening of Elk Creek Elementary School for a week. The school will open Aug. 25, one week later than the scheduled opening of school district-wide.

Elk Creek Elementary has been transformed from the former Riverside Middle School into the newest Re-2 elementary school.

The new Riverside Middle School, next to Kathryn Senor Elementary School in Castle Valley, is scheduled to open on the same day as the rest of the district, Monday, Aug. 18.

Ventriloquist Wayne Francis will be at the New Castle Branch Library from 7-8 p.m. tonight. His show includes life-sized puppets, original comedy music and lots of audience participation. Wayne and his copilot, WingNut, provide entertainment for all ages. Children, parents and grandparents will all enjoy the show.

To celebrate a successful summer reading program and to thank the residents of New Castle for their patronage, the New Castle Branch Library and the New Castle Friends of the Library are hosting an end of summer party in the park, to be held from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, at Burning Mountain Park.

Families are encouraged to join in on the free night of family fun including live music provided by the Last Minute String Band, free ice cream and door prizes. Participants are asked to bring a blanket or lawn chair to sit on.

Due to popular demand, New Castle Branch Library’s Storytime will resume at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13. Toddler Storytime remains at 10:30 a.m. every Friday.

Young families are encouraged to join in the stories, crafts and friends. Call Diane at 984-2346 for more information.

An End-of-Summer Flea Market, fun-in-the-sun event, will start at 8 a.m. Aug. 23, at the Apple Tree Village Green. It’s a giant yard sale and all kinds of water fun for the young and young at heart. Water fun starts at noon.

Due to changes from the New Castle Police Department, Kindall’s Run for a Reason will start at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, at Burning Mountain Park in downtown New Castle, and finish at the New Castle City Market.

The event is a fundraiser for the Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood Program.

The New Castle Garden Club invites all to its next monthly meeting, to be held at 7 p.m. Aug. 19 at OZ Studio, 331 West Main Street in downtown New Castle. This month’s guest speaker will be John Buerger, owner of Alpha Natural Inc. John has visited the community garden site and will share information on amending local soil. The regular monthly business meeting will follow the presentation, and all are invited to stay.

If you would like to help out The Realm of Music Festival, to be held from Aug. 8-10 at Klein Ranch in New Castle, make plans to attend a volunteer meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 30, at Sayre Park in Glenwood Springs.

New Castle Recreation will be hosting an American Red Cross First Aid and CPR class from 8 a.m. 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, at the New Castle Community Center.
