Showing generosity is part of the holidays
Most of us will have a table packed with delicious food on Christmas day. Most of us will have gifts under the tree and stockings stuffed with goodies. Most of us will not worry about life’s hurdles too much. Most of us are lucky. We work hard and we are thankful for our home, family, friends and for our comfortable lives. We’ve earned it. But there are others who aren’t so lucky. Others who need help. Some people fall on tough times and need help.We here at the Post Independent are currently in the middle of our annual Holiday Fund benefit drive. We help raise money for local nonprofits. It’s many of those nonprofits who benefit our community. We need your help to meet our goal of $20,000. Every cent of the money raised will go to nonprofit organizations in Garfield County. The Holiday Fund is our way of giving back a little. We depend on the nonprofits to distribute funds so our community is a better place.A community should take care of itself. A community should be responsible for filling in the cracks and pitching in when people need help. There are many worthy nonprofits and other charitable organizations that can always use our help. The holiday season is always the time when generosity gains momentum and that’s the way it should be. The holidays are always the time when we should feel thankful for the things we have and take stock of just how lucky we are. Those of us who have many things to be thankful for, should take this holiday season to give a little back. One of the great nonprofits that the Holiday Fund benefits is the community chest. This is an emergency fund that is used when it’s most needed, for a family who loses a home to fire or suffers a devastating tragedy. The unexpected can rarely be planned for. However, the community chest does just that. It’s those funds that will help people who are hit with the unexpected. It will help them climb back onto their feet when life has knocked them down. We’re asking that you help our fundraiser and donate to the Holiday Fund, so the local nonprofits can benefit. But we’re also asking that you take this holiday season to show your generosity and give to the charity of your choice.Whether it’s the Salvation Army kettle, LIFT-UP, the United Way, our Holiday Fund or whatever, we’re asking that you support the community that belongs to all of us.As a community, we hope that people will see how generous and caring we truly are. Happy holidays to all of you, and take a moment to remember what your thankful for, then think of some of the people who can use your help.
