United Way an easy way to give

Even in tight economic times, we are still a very prosperous community.

But some folks struggle and need our help. That’s where United Way of Garfield County can step in.

The locally based United Way organization collects donations from generous people and spreads the money among 20 worthwhile community nonprofit organizations.

The one thing they all have in common is helping people live better lives.

Under the new leadership of the capable Leslie Robinson, United Way of Garfield County has begun its 2003 fund-raising campaign.

Robinson understands that her first campaign may not be a blockbuster. She’s set three financial goals: a sustainable goal of $175,000, which keeps funding even for nonprofits; an attainable goal of $250,000, which she believes can be met if enough people participate; and a challenge goal of $350,000.

She expects to meet the challenge in future years, but probably not in 2003.

United Way has suffered from scandal at the national level, and an inconsistent presence at the local level. But scandal is in the past, and all the dollars raised locally stay with the local organization.

United Way is the easiest form of charitable giving around, particularly for those who choose a payroll deduction. A deduction of $10 or $20 a paycheck will hardly be missed, yet in a year it adds up to a generous contribution.

It’s the kind of giving that goes a long way to helping our neighbors, and makes donors feel like they can make a real difference in someone’s life.

Robinson is ready to explain the kinds of programs United Way supports, and to help employers set up a payroll deduction program. Now is the time to give.
