Wednesday letters: Disinformation, education, city council candidacy support and more

Disinformation fuels harmful policies
Disinformation is a tool of the current administration in Washington, D.C. For example, “The Russia-Ukraine war was started by Ukraine.” It is well known that Russia invaded Ukraine. Then the current president and Elon Musk have said, “Tens of millions of Social Security checks are being mailed to dead people.” There is no evidence to back this up.
Their “facts” are meant to make Americans believe that we need to fire federal employees like researchers working on health issues such as cancer and bird flu and FBI agents who protect Americans from domestic and foreign criminals. The current president and Elon Musk say we need to cut funding for our schools as well as for Medicare and Medicaid. These steps will make America “great again.”
What is the true goal of the above? Ordinary Americans will have to suffer so billionaires (Musk and Bezos) and millionaires can pay less in taxes.

Supporting early literacy through community generosity
On behalf of Raising a Reader Aspen to Parachute, I would like to express our deepest gratitude to the Glenwood Springs Kiwanis Club for their recent Holiday Burn-Off fundraiser, which helped purchase 1,500 early literacy books for children in our region.
Early literacy is the foundation for lifelong learning, and access to books at a young age is critical to a child’s development. Thanks to the Glenwood Springs Kiwanis Club’s efforts, more children and families will have the opportunity to experience the joy of reading routinely at home, expand their imaginations, and build the essential skills for future success.
To the Glenwood Springs Kiwanis Club and all of the sponsors and participants who contributed to and participated in the Holiday Burn-Off, thank you for making a significant difference in the lives of the youngest children in our community.

House budget cuts threaten healthcare and essential services
On Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2025, the Republican-led House Budget Committee approved a budget resolution that finances $4 trillion in tax cuts for the rich.
Most of the cuts will disproportionately affect middle- and low-income families.
Please call Rep. Jeff Hurd (202-225-4676) and demand that he prioritizes the health of his constituents over tax cuts for the wealthy.

Supporting Jon Banks for Glenwood Springs City Council
City Council elections are coming up, and I’m looking forward to some fresh faces on Council. I’m supporting Jon Banks in Ward 5. He was a leader of the Keep Glenwood Glenwood campaign. He showed vision and leadership to get the movement going and followed up with tenacity, strategic thinking, and solid hard work during the successful campaign.
These are the qualities we need on Council. If you voted to Keep Glenwood Glenwood, you’ll like Jon Banks.

A heartfelt thank you to Leigh McGown
I want to give a huge “thank you” to Leigh McGown of YMHS in Glenwood Springs. Seeing the article about her journey was so wonderful. She was my teacher throughout my four years of high school, and I will never forget the unwavering support and love she showed me and everyone who was blessed to have her as a teacher and a mentor.
Leigh, if you see this, I just want you to know that you made a huge difference in my life and instilled an integrity in me that has helped me last almost 20 years in the medical field and raise four wonderful, smart, respectful children. Just like many of the kids you have helped since then, I am forever grateful.
Best of luck at your new (old) job. With love,
Amy Ross, Class of ’06, Grand Junction
