Wednesday letters: Jeff Cheney’s impact and global ironies

Praising Cheney for district attorney leadership

As 2024 comes to a close, I would like to take a moment to speak on behalf of my fellow citizens in the 9th Judicial District. Eight years ago, Jefferson Cheney was sworn in as the District Attorney for this district, which includes Pitkin, Garfield, and Rio Blanco counties.

As many of you know, the diversity among these counties is significant, both socio-economically and politically, and representing the fore mentioned diversities has its own challenges. Over the years, the DA’s office has often been a focal point of controversy, with issues ranging from impeachments to conflicts with law enforcement agencies—ultimately affecting our communities and their citizens.

However, I wish to highlight that over the past eight years, the conversation surrounding the DA’s office has been notably different. Jeff Cheney and his team have exemplified true bipartisanship by prioritizing the needs of the citizens they serve, particularly by advocating for victims of crime, and not being afraid to prosecute criminals. As a Deputy with the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office for the past eight years, I have consistently heard positive feedback from Jeff’s colleagues and law enforcement agencies that work alongside the DA’s office, from Aspen to Meeker.

Jeff has not only met but exceeded the standards expected of his role. Our community owes him a deep debt of gratitude for his dedicated service. In an era where negative publicity often garners more attention, Jeff has chosen to take the high road, focusing on hard work and integrity. I sincerely hope that this standard of excellence continues in the years to come.

Devil’s advocate

It’s time for China to buy more land. We already own a quarter of Utah, and of Arizona and 20% of California, half of North Carolina, and a better part of Nevada, not to mention land in over half of the states, often located near military bases. Having an exclusive market to sell military drones to the US Defense Department is great. Ironic. Don’t forget we have cyber time bombs located on American water supplies and ports. We must keep the prescription market ours.

As for us in Mexico, cartels give money to “mules” in the United States to provide high-power weaponry to us that aren’t sold in Mexico so we can kill anyone stopping the flow of fentanyl. Again, ironic.

We Israelis are sad, but happier when others are sad. What gives us the greatest joy is our superiority. We teased the Palestinians with our all-nighter outside their reservation. The cost of 1200 Israelis was worth the murder of 40,000 Palestinians in search of “Hezbollah leaders.” The pocket pager incident was a coup. We learned to spread fear from those in the 1930s, but it was more fun this time. That makes us happy. We will never agree on a two-state solution. Hail Netanyahu. Throw garbage down on those who live below in the West Bank. The metaphor is complete.

We will miss Joe Biden and his family for allowing this. May his legacy live on in those who never follow the news. Publish more of their letters. Thank you.
