X Games mean x-tra revenue for Glenwood

“X” truly marks the spot for excitement and extreme sports. It also marks the spot for extra revenue for some Glenwood Springs businesses. The popular Winter X Games that wrapped up earlier this week in Aspen lured thousands of winter sports fans from around the country. The extreme sports culture and fan base has swept much of the country. More than 69,000 spectators have gone to the games each of the last two years. That includes many from Garfield County. Some area schools even gave students the day off on Monday – maybe not as an official Winter X Games day off – but it did give them the opportunity for another day of extreme sports fun.A number of Glenwood motels and restaurants saw a nice little bump in business over the five-day period. Aspen recently signed a contract to keep the Winter X Games until 2010. That’s good news for trickle-down economics. Aspen has never been the cheapest place to stay. That means many X Games fans trickled down the valley looking for less expensive places to stay and eat. That means extra money for some businesses in Glenwood, Carbondale and maybe even further west.Keeping the Winter X Games in Aspen is a good move. It’s a perfect venue in one of America’s premiere ski and snowboarding towns. It’s a great way to promote Aspen and its winter activities and mountain charm, plus the games provide some trickle-down benefits to downvalley motels, hotels and restaurants. The X Games crowd may not swarm into the area buying goods of all kinds but it’s nice to have an annual venue that will provide an economic jolt to a few businesses in late January.
