Help change House representation

We need a champion in your county. We are collecting petition signatures to place an initiative on the November 2014 ballot to change how we elect representatives in the Colorado House.

Our 65 House districts are currently equal in population. Of the 65 members, all but 12 are from the Front Range. In any vote, Colorado citizens outside the Front Range have very little voice in decisions, since both our House and Senate are based on population. Our proposal would change districts from being based on population to being based on county boundaries for one representative per county, similar to the U.S. Senate’s makeup of two senators per state regardless of population. Wyoming gets two senators, as does California. That change would give every part of the state a fair voice in how Coloradans are governed.

Our effort is well received and understood by many Coloradans, but our goal of collecting 100,000 signatures by Aug. 1 is monumental. Many people are carrying petitions, but we are looking for a champion in every county who is willing to lead a local effort with petitions to restore Colorado to fair representation. Consider gathering friends who believe in making a difference with this ballot initiative. If every county had 16 volunteers who carried two petitions each, we can get the issue on the ballot.

Phillips County Commissioner Joe Kinnie and I (Phillips County administrator) from Northeast Colorado, as private individuals, are proponents of the Restoring Colorado initiative. If you could be the champion for your county, give us a call at (970) 520-0502 or (970) 520-1475, or go to

We are excited about the potential for this initiative, but we need your help now to get this done.
