Citizen Telegram Letters to the Editor: Rickstrew for CMC board, music a key to education

Rickstrew for CMC trustee

This letter is an endorsement of Jay Rickstrew for the Colorado Mountain College Board of Trustees in District 3.

Jay is a very capable business person and generous community member. We have worked with Jay on numerous business transactions and his knowledge, professionalism and integrity have always been a great asset to us.

He is a great supporter of Western Garfield county and has worked on the Downtown Development Authority of Rifle and the Rifle Regional Economic Development Corp. to improve the business climate and jobs in our area. Out of the same motivation, he has been a great supporter of Colorado Mountain College as a catalyst for job creation in Western Garfield county.

Serving on the Garfield School District Re-2 school board for eight years has given Jay a real understanding of the value of CMC for the advanced education of our students. As a parent of two high school-age children, he has had personal knowledge of the benefit our schools receive from the cooperation of CMC with the local schools to help students. Jay’s understanding of the value of CMC as an educational institution, economic engine and a cultural asset to Garfield County make him the best candidate for the board of trustees from Western Garfield County.

Music: a key to education

Music is very important and an essential part of a student’s education. Researchers tell us the people who will be the most successful in the next 50 years are those who have the creative skills taught in the arts. Learning to play an instrument is now a requirement at some top engineering schools. However, we need to focus on the arts not just to help our kids be more successful in the work force. We need to support and encourage music education to help our students enjoy more fruitful lives.

To that end, here are several reasons why a student should be involved in music:

1. Music has an intrinsic value – the process of enjoying making music in class is the reward.

2. Music promotes positive academic and peer associations.

3. Music programs can be a preparation for life:

a) Provides an emotional and creative outlet.

b) Musical and verbal communication.

c) Music develops consistency between intellectual and emotional thinking.

d) Commitment and self-discipline through practicing and performing.

e) Performance opportunities develop poise and self-confidence.

f) Helps develop problem-solving skills through the development and creative process.

g) Provides opportunities to develop leadership and management skills.

4. Music study helps to develop spatial reasoning and multi-tasking skills. Music creates a bridge between the creative, linguistic, side of the brain and the logical, mathematical, side.

5. Music programs allow for 100 percent participation while teaching total cooperative and collective learning.

6. Music programs provide exposure to a broad variety of music, developing an appreciation for not only music as an art form, but also for a diverse spectrum of music.

Band and choir are a necessary component of the educational experience for students to be prepared for life in an ever-changing and competitive globally connected economy.
