Coal Ridge to host 3A state playoff regional bracket
Just one day after winning the 3A Western Slope League district tournament championship over the Basalt Longhorns at Grand Junction Central High School, the Coal Ridge boys basketball team received more great news Sunday afternoon, earning the chance to host the regional bracket of the 3A state playoffs as a No. 7 seed.
Coming off of a 17-5, 8-1 season record and a league title, Coal Ridge is looking to make a deep run in the 3A state playoffs, starting Friday evening in New Castle against No. 26 Frontier Academy (14-8, 6-2) at 7 p.m.
Should the Titans win, they’ll take on the winner of No. 10 Sterling (17-5)-No. 23 Buena Vista (13-9) from Friday afternoon’s matchup at Coal Ridge High School.
If the Titans were to advance past Frontier Academy and the winner of Sterling-Buena Vista, the Titans will earn a berth in the Great Eight of the 3A state playoffs.
Along with Coal Ridge, Basalt will head into the state playoffs as the No. 9 seed, where it’ll take on No. 24 University (13-9) in the regional bracket at No. 8 Denver School of Science and Technology. The Longhorns finished the season 17-2, 8-1 3A WSL but fell to the Titans in the regular season title race before then falling to the Titans in the district tournament title.
Outside of Coal Ridge and Basalt in the 3A boys bracket, the Roaring Fork boys and the Grand Valley boys also earned berths in the state playoffs.
Roaring Fork (17-5) will enter the state playoffs as the No. 18 seed, where the Rams will take on No. 15 Manual (15-7) at No. 2 Manitou Springs High School on Friday afternoon. Grand Valley (10-10) will enter the state playoffs as the No. 30 seed, where the Cardinals will take on No. 3 Colorado Springs Christian (20-2) Friday night.
On the girls side of the 3A bracket, just one local team will represent the valley in the state playoffs.
No. 18 Grand Valley (15-7) just missed out on hosting a regional bracket after falling to No. 6 Moffat County in the district tournament final. By falling to Moffat County, the Cardinals now have to travel to No. 2 Centauri to take on No. 15 Lutheran (13-9) in a first round matchup on the road.
First round action of the regionals will tip off Friday night at 5:30 p.m.
