Coal Ridge High School won the Colorado High School Activities Association 3A Cheer championship at the Denver Coliseum on Saturday, besting the squad’s runner-up performance from last year to win the school’s first-ever state cheerleading title.

The Titans were the top team coming out of the preliminary round on Friday, posting a score of 76.6 in the finals to beat out Faith Christian (76.3). The Academy was third in the 3A Cheer category with a score of 74.5.

“This team has worked incredibly hard and overcame many obstacles over the last few weeks,” Coal Ridge coach Alyssa Thurmon said. “They hit a zero deduction routine both days, which we knew we would have to do. I could not be more proud of them and all of their hard work.”

Competing in the 4A Cheer category, the Glenwood Springs High School squad took fifth place, improving over its 10th-place performance from last year.

The Demons stood in second place after the preliminary round on Friday, but a finals score of 77.2 put them behind state champion Valor Christian (83.1), Thompson Valley (81.7), Palmer Ridge (79.9) and Wheat Ridge (77.4). Glenwood won the state title in 2014.

Other area teams competing at the state spirit championships this year were Rifle in 4A Cheer, Roaring Fork High School of Carbondale in the 2A/3A Coed division, and Grand Valley, Basalt and Aspen in the 3A Poms division.
