Community coat drive underway in New Castle, Silt
Donations for the sixth annual community coat drive will be accepted through the end of the week in New Castle and Silt.
The coat drive, a collaborative effort between several area nonprofits and businesses, provides donated winter clothing to residents in need at two distribution days. The first distribution day is Saturday, Oct. 29, at Riverside Middle School, located at 215 Alder Ave. in New Castle. The second distribution day is the following Saturday, Nov. 5, at the Garfield County Fairgrounds South Hall in Rifle.
The distribution days are open to anyone in need, explained Katie Weant, assistant director at the River Center, a local nonprofit that helps organize the coat drive.
Reach Out Colorado, the Salvation Army, the Rifle Area Chamber of Commerce and Canyon Cleaners, located in Silt, also are assisting with the coat drive, which is entering its sixth year.
“We’re all working together to just help families and individuals with getting the appropriate clothing,” Weant said.
Last year the coat drive provided coats to more than 500 families, according to Weant.
Donation boxes are located in schools and public libraries in New Castle and Silt. An additional donation box is located at the New Castle City Market. Donations will be accepted through Friday, Oct. 28.
Organizers ask that people donate gently used or even new items including coats, gloves, boots and winter hats.
“We don’t want to give anyway anything you would probably throw away,” Weant said.
