Crews douse structure fire in New Castle
Colorado River Fire Rescue crews battled a structure fire Saturday afternoon on River Frontage Road in New Castle, near Rippy Lane.
According to residents in the area, the fire started around 2:30 p.m. next to PSI Crane & Rigging. The structure, which is part of a crane company not affiliated with PSI Crane & Rigging, reportedly caught fire after a controlled burn in front of the shop got out of control, engulfing the structure within minutes.
No one was inside the structure, and everyone in the area is uninjured.
A downed power line needed to be shut off in front of the shop, according to local residents, and loud popping could be heard coming from the structure. There reportedly was ammunition inside.
Even as the fire burned, the structure was considered a total loss, according to Colorado River Fire Rescue Public Information Officer Maria Piña. Firefighters were using a defensive technique to try and control the fire from spreading because wind in the area has picked up considerably.
As of roughly 7:30 p.m., firefighters had contained the blaze and were in the process of extinguishing the last known hot spots. From there, the fire marshal will conduct an investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire.
