Disgruntled restaurant worker brings handgun

An ex-employee of a Glenwood Springs restaurant was arrested at the end of February after threatening the store manager with a firearm, say police.

The 21-year-old man is from Rifle, and he was going through a breakup with the manager’s daughter, also an employee of the restaurant, according to an arrest affidavit.

On Feb. 23 afternoon he called into dispatch to report his girlfriend had slapped him outside of the restaurant the day before. He’d recently quit working at the restaurant. “(He) stated that the slap was hard enough to ‘ring my bell and make my ears ring,’” according to the affidavit.

An hour after calling police he went to the restaurant to collect his last check and turn in his store keys.

The store manager later told police that the man hadn’t shown up for several of his shifts. When he turned in his keys the manager informed the man he wouldn’t get his check until payday.

He then became upset and said he had “no problem shooting her ‘right now,’” tapping his “right side where he carries his concealed handgun,” according to the affidavit.

Surveillance video shows what appears to be a bulge on his right hip, police say.

The 21-year-old man later told police the manager “threatened to ‘punch’ him in the face,” and that he left to avoid her “drama.” When questioned about why he took his handgun, he said he was scared of her and she had a criminal record.

He told her only that he was prepared to defend himself and patted his side, he told police. She then followed him outside and attempted to start a fight, he said.

About 30 minutes after the incident, the went to the police department to give details about his girlfriend slapping him.

Glenwood Springs police arrested the 21-year-old on charges of menacing with a firearm, a class 5 felony; and carrying a concealed weapon, a misdemeanor.
