Golf clinics at Lakota Canyon

The New Castle Recreation Department, in partnership with Lakota Canyon Golf Course, is offering adult golf clinics.

The clinics will consist of one-on-one and group instruction, range work, putting and chipping, and golf etiquette. Clinics are open to all ability levels.

The adult clinics are offered monthly throughout the spring and summer, with the first session May 7-28. Cost is $99 per person for four classes, or $25 for one class. Students should bring their own clubs, but rentals are available on a limited basis.

Rifle Creek Golf Club men’s league registration

The Rifle Creek’s Men’s Club is now accepting members for its 2013 Thursday Night Men’s Club. It is two-man team play. Play is 5:30 p.m. Thursdays. League play starts Thursday, May 2.

Mountain Air charity golf tournament

The 11th annual Mountain Air Charity Golf Tournament will take place at 12:30 p.m. Friday, May 17, at Rifle Creek Golf Course.

Tournament proceeds will go to Garfield County Search & Rescue. Registration is limited, so early registration is encouraged. Charitable contributions to the organization will also be accepted.

YOUTH SPORTS

Hershey Track Meet

The annual Hershey Track and Field meet will make its return to Rifle at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 1, at Bears Stadium.

The national program includes events such as the softball throw, standing long jump, relays, sprint and distance running events. Participants can be from ages 9-14. Children from ages 3-8 will be invited to participate, but will not be eligible for state competition.

Winners can advance to state and national competitions. Registration is free.

Tiny Tumblers

The New Castle Recreation Department is offering a new Tiny Tumblers program for children ages 2-4.

Tiny Tumblers offers parents a break while the toddlers learn balance, flexibility and have lots of daytime fun. Classes are conducted Tuesday mornings from 11 to 11:45 a.m. at the New Castle Community Center from May 7-28. The fee is $25 for four classes.

British soccer camp

The Parachute/Battlement Mesa Recreation District is hosting the second-annual Challenger Sports British Soccer Camp, Aug. 5-9 at Cottonwood Park in Parachute.

The camp will emphasize fundamental and advanced instruction for diverse age groups. Information: 285-0388.

BASEBALL/SOFTBALL

Vintage base ball

The New Castle Recreation Department will host a vintage base ball tournament as part of the town’s 125th anniversary celebration on June 15 at VIX Ranch Park.

The tournament will be played using base ball rules and equipment from the late 19th century. Individual registration is being accepted, and teams will be formed following a rules clinic on Sunday, May 19. Participants receive a uniform top and cap to replicate the one worn by the New Castle Blues team, which played teams from around the region.

Registration is $40 and includes a uniform top, ball cap, rules clinic and practices, along with lunch, snacks and beverages during the tournament.

Softball camp

The New Castle Recreation Department will host a girls fast pitch softball clinic and camp in early May.

Clinics will focus on the basic fundamentals of fast pitch softball and will be held at 8 a.m. Friday, May 3, for ages 8-12, and 8 a.m. Saturday, May 4, for ages 13-15. Clinics will be at Elk Creek Elementary School, and participants will receive beverages, prizes and a DVD. Cost is $40 per player.

Camps begin Monday, May 13, and include instruction on basic softball skills. The camp will feature a AAA pitching coach. Registration deadline is Friday, May 3, and camp cost is $65.

Coed softball tournament fund raiser

The Big Bats for Lil’ Bats adult coed softball tournament, held by the New Castle Recreation Department, will take place at 9 a.m. Sunday, May 5.

The tournament is a fund raiser for the New Castle youth softball and baseball programs. Games will be played at Elk Creek Elementary School. Registration is $200 per team.

RUNNING

Titan Trot 5K run/walk

The Coal Ridge High School Booster Club will host the Titan Trot 5k run/walk at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 4.

The race will start at Cactus Valley Elementary in Silt. Proceeds will benefit Coal Ridge High School athletics. Cost is $25 for pre-race registration and $30 on race day.
