John Albert Hier

John Albert Hier, age 67, of Parachute, Colorado, passed away on Aug. 13, 2015 in his home.

Funeral services will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church on Friday, Aug. 21, at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, St. Mary’s, Nebraska. Fox Funeral Home of Sterling, Nebraska will be handling the arrangements.

John was born in Lincoln, Nebraska to Frances and Dorlen Hier on April 3, 1948. He attended Sterling High School in Sterling, Nebraska. He went on to earn a bachelor’s and a master’s degree from the University of Nebraska. He served as the city manager of Abilene, Kansas from 1986-1995, the city manager of Carbondale, Colorado from 1995-2004, and the city manager of Rifle, Colorado from 2004 until his retirement in 2013. John was an avid fisherman, gardener, runner, skier, hiker, and competitive motor cross racer.

He is survived by his daughter Jackie Hinkle, grandson Owen Hinkle, second wife Melissa Guillebeau, step-daughter Melanie Millage, and granddaughter Brooklyn Millage. He is also survived by nine brothers and sisters and their spouses, as well as 26 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, JoAnn Hier, and his parents Frances and Dorlen Hier.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to either the Cancer Research Institute (http://www.cancerresearch.org) or the Sierra Club Foundation (http://www.sierraclubfoundation.org).
